Director of Environment Land Resource Development

Lehigh Hanson is North America's leading supplier of cement, aggregates, ready mix concrete, and asphalt. We are also part of Heidelberg Cement Group, one of the world's largest building materials companies. We are seeking a leader to oversee and drive forward our environmental and sustainability functions for the Permanente site in Cupertino, California. The position will also manage other ongoing environmental liabilities in this region. The successful candidate willreport to the Vice President
- Environment & Sustainability. This position is based in Cupertino, California. External candidates must be able to work in the USA without sponsorship. What you'll get to do Oversee the execution of investigations, remedial designs, and remediation activities for legacy environmental liabilities and reclamation obligations per the Company's environmental provision process. Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the Environment and Sustainability functions at the Permanente site. Train, coach, and mentor operations leaders, staff, and environmental personnel. Direct the analysis and evaluation of air, water, waste, and land systems and implement appropriate corrective actions. Track and follow new state and local environmental regulations that may affect Lehigh Hanson operations. Communicate to management and comment where appropriate on new proposed environmental regulations. Oversee the evaluation of operations and make recommendations to reduce waste or emissions. Coordinate and check preparation of applications and reports for state and federal regulatory agencies to ensure compliance with permit conditions. Obtain, update, and maintain plans, permits and standard operating procedures. Ensure compliance with licensing requirements. Provide technical support and ensure adequate recordkeeping for environmental compliance. Effectively interact with regulatory agencies at all levels (federal, state, and local), as necessary. Conduct regulatory agency negotiations and interactions with the public and other stakeholders. Provide oversight and manage environmental staff and consultants. Manage environmental risk to minimize exposure and liability to personnel, property, and the environment. Investigate complaints and suspected violations. Monitor follow-up actions. Prepare written, oral, tabular, and graphic reports summarizing requirements, regulations, results and conclusions. Travel as appropriate. Assures compliance of all plant operations with company policy and federal, state, and local regulations. The candidate must understand and comply with Company compliance policies, including the Code of Business Conduct (including North America supplements), the anti-corruption policy and the Antitrust Compliance Policy, and is required to participate in compliance training in such policies and provide disclosures and compliance certifications from time to time. The candidate is expected to require compliance with such policies by subordinates, monitor their activities for compliance and disclose incidents of non-compliance as provided by such policies. Essential Experience and Skills.
Bachelor's degree in Geology, Engineering or other related degree. Advanced degree preferred. Professional Engineer or Professional Geologist license preferred, but not required. Current 40-hour OSHA training certification preferred. Current MSHA New Miner training preferred. Minimum of 10 years of environmental experience in a heavy manufacturing industry; cement/mining industry preferred. At least 10 years project management experience utilizing cost tracking practices and systems. Expertise in Federal and State environmental regulations and procedures. Strong management, communication, technical writing and influencing skills at all levels from senior leadership to plant level employees. Experience and ability to coach and teach both environmental and operations personnel. Prior supervisory experience required. Physical Aspects of the Job Will regularly be exposed to: Employee must be able to function in an office environment as well as the Lehigh Hanson industrial environment including the environmental conditions described below and the physical demands of working/ at the plant level (standing, walking, sitting, stooping, kneeling, climbing, crouching or crawling).Employee is required to sit, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear. Use of personal protective equipment including a respirator. Specific vision abilities required by the position include: Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less)Distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more)Color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors)Peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point)Depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships)Ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus) Will frequently be exposed to plant environment conditions which include: Wet or humid conditions.
Work near moving mechanical parts.
Work in high, precarious places.
Fumes or airborne particles.
Toxic or caustic chemicals.
Outdoor weather conditions.
Extreme cold and extreme heat (non-weather)Industrial risks like those experienced by operations personnel including noise, dust, electrical and machine risks, large equipment and vehicles, working at heights, working outdoors and around water, and occasional work in enclosed spaces.
