Clinical Nurse Specialist

Position Summary

A Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is a Masters prepared Advanced.
Practice Registered Nurse whose function is to improve outcomes inpatient care within the three spheres of practice: patient care,nursing, and systems. The Pediatric Clinical Nurse Specialist is aclinical expert in pediatric nursing who, in addition to providingdirect care, serves as a leader in education, research, qualityimprovement, outcome monitoring and consultation with other health careproviders
The CNS utilizes a theory-based practice to provide and/or direct theclinical case management for a specialty pediatric population. The CNSfunctioning within the area of expertise works in collaboration with,and is an integral member, of a multidisciplinary health care team. TheCNS has a strong foundation in providing an environment of safe qualitycare. The CNS demonstrates an advanced level of medical and nursingknowledge, clinical and technical competence, sound clinical judgment,professionalism as it relates to interpersonal and general communicationskills, timely and compliant documentation, and takes responsibility formanaging professional development and competency validation. The CNS hasresponsibility for the quality of standards of nursing care for aspecific patient population and evidences self-direction andaccountability in the development of this role within the organization.

Position Requirements



Master's Degree in nursing.


3 years pediatric nursing experience required. Intensive care experience preferred (PICU specific). Specializededucational preparation and or extensive clinical experience inspecialty area. Knowledge,


& Abilities: Maintains current knowledge andcompetence in the area of specialization and in professional practicethrough review and critique of the literature, attendance at conferencesand continuing education programs, and maintenance of active membershipin local and national organizations. Skill level is current to enableemployee to provide direct nursing care during periods of censusfluctuation or other staffing emergencies. Progressive, flexible, teamoriented. Demonstrates the knowledge of neonatal, infant, child andadolescent growth and development principles and applies theseprinciples when caring for patients and families. Is able to modifyplan of care based on assessment and interpretation of a client's growthand development. Experience with quality improvement systems, such asLean, preferred. Technical Knowledge: Competence with computer systems and adequateskills for EMR use required. Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel,Power.
Point)Required Licenses and Certification: Active California Registered.
Nurse license required. Clinical nurse specialist certification orequivalent per BRN, Chapter 6, Article 9: Clinical Nurse Specialistsection 2838-2838.
4. Current American Heart Association CPRcertification (BLS). Current American Heart Association Pediatric.
Advanced Life support (PALS)Physical


Sit: Up to 6 hours per day.
Stand/Walk: 6-8 hours per day.
Bend/Stoop: Up to 3 hours per day.
Reach: Up to 6 hours per day.
Repetitive Use of Upper Extremities: Up to 6 hours per day.
Lift/Push/Pull : 25 pounds, over 25 pounds with assistance orequipment.
This job requires the ability to hear alarms clients and/or instruction. The ability to see accurately from 20 inches to 20-ft. Reasonableaccommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities toperform the essential function of this position.
