Consider a move to the Twin Cities Position Overview The University of Minnesota seeks a Senior Director who will provide strategic vision and leadership for the Application Development directorate within itrsquos Office of Information Technology (OIT). OIT's mission is to serve as a catalyst for leveraging technology to advance and support extraordinary education, breakthrough research, and dynamic public engagement the Individual in this position plays a key role in engaging staff to fulfill this mission. The Senior Director provides critical direction for the strategic management of enterprise-level application development. Application Development consisting of approximately 110 full-time staff, is one of six major functional areas in OIT. This team of analysts and developers serves the enterprise and other application needs of our business partners, some of which include human resources, finance, and student administration. The Senior Director position requires strong leadership skills, understanding of complex business and technical processes as well as an ability to mentor and coach the direct reports (line managers), service owners and staff to ensure high levels of operational performance and effectiveness within OIT. The Senior Director serves as a member of the IT Leadership Team within OIT and reports directly to the Vice President and Chief Information Officer.
OIT has approximately 500 full-time staff and an annual operating budget of approximately 96 million. It is the University's central IT unit and provides enterprise-level technologies and services that are broadly consumed and core to central administrative business operations. Job ResponsibilitiesStrategy Oversee enterprise application development activities and provide strategic vision and leadership. Initiate and foster business partnerships across the University that increase efficiency and effectiveness balance business partner needs with University and OIT priorities, business strategies, and objectives. Cultivate an environment of continuous improvement. Ensure the highest levels of stability and performance for enterprise applications. Stay abreast of new vulnerabilities and use knowledge in security to protect applications and data. Leverage SaaS and PaaS services. Operational Excellence Plan and manage operational budget in collaboration with the OIT Business Office. Collaborate with application development managers to drive ITIL shybased operational support models across enterprise applications. Incorporate critical application improvements into release cycles to enhance production stability. Follow industry-standard development and deployment processes (SDLC, DevOps, version control). Leadership Develop and coach managers to be effective people leaders. Perform and provide guidance on job design, staffing, performance management, resource allocation, and skills forecasting. Set clear expectations and create a climate that empowers others, provide recognition, and encourages high performance. Foster an inclusive environment appreciative of differences in the workplace. Meaningfully participate in and lead efforts to support the Universityrsquos commitment to equity and diversity. Provide direct oversight for senior managers in the application development area, including performance evaluations, coaching, and professional development. Please document qualifications on resume. Required Qualification Bachelorrsquos degree and 10 years of related experience to include information technology managerial experience in a complex organization. Prior experience with performance management, managing managers, resource forecasting and hiring, job development, unit organizational structure, resource allocation, skills forecasting and development, direct report coaching and development. Prior experience with leading the implementation and customization of large-scale vendor applications. Experience in supporting a broad base of users and systems. Thorough understanding of software development methodologies. Proven successful time management, problem-solving, and analytical skills in an information technology setting. Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of constituents.
