  • Last Friday, I had the pleasure of delivering an Ed Talk at the California Teachers Summit.
  • My talk was focused on the importance of helping students find their voices and connect with an authentic audience.
  • The California Teachers Summit was for teachers by teachers.
  • As I wandered around checking out the teacher led sessions, I was struck by how powerful professional development can be when it is led by teachers.
  • Id love to see more events that allow teachers the time and space to share best practices!

Invest in Innovation

  • However, in the last 5 months Ive gotten a crash course in just how challenging it is for a single teacher to make meaningful change at a school or district level.
  • Ive spent the last five months filling out forms, writing course descriptions, meeting with decision makers, attending site council and board meetings, responding to a barrage of emails, and jumping through the necessary hoops to get a new program off the ground for next year.
  • Heres what Ive learned…schools and districts might like the idea of being progressive and innovative, but innovation requires two essential ingredients that are beyond my control as a teacher: financial investment and the desire to change.
  • If education is going to continue to evolve and improve, school districts must be willing to invest in new innovative programs.
  • When my first presentation to request funding foralternative furniture to enhance the project-based philosophy of this new program was met with skepticism instead of excitement, I wrote aDonors Choose project for moveable furniture.

  • This podcast features an introductory overview about instructional coaching and technology integration coaching specifically, drawing on the authors experiences in this role with teachers since the late 1990s.
  • The second part of the podcast features an interview with middle school French teacher Blake Pardue, who has been connecting his students to pen pal classrooms of French speaking students in Europe and in Africa for several years.
  • The past two years, Blakes students have used the iPad app Explain Everything to create media-rich introductions of themselves and practice their French skills with their pen pals.
  • This interview was a reflection with Blake Pardue and Wes Fryer about this years iteration of the Explain Everything project, which utilized the new cloud based and collaborative version.
