Small-school stars: Bucs sign two tryout players to rookie contracts

[/vc_column_text] [vc_column_text el_class=”topfeed-summary-list”]

  • The Bucs’ penchant for finding gems at small schools in college football continued Sunday, as Tampa Bay signed two tryout players from lower-level programs to rookie contracts after they impressed at rookie minicamp.
  • Both came to minicamp on tryout contracts, and now have a chance to continue the Bucs’ success under general manager Jason Licht in finding talent in undrafted rookies.
  • The Bucs also are sticking with Arkansas quarterback Austin Allen as their fourth QB moving forward, and not signing tryout QB Riley Ferguson of Memphis.
  • The team has 14 undrafted rookies on its 91-man roster those hope to follow the footsteps of current Bucs like TEs Cameron Brate, Alan Cross and Anthony Auclair, WR Adam Humphries, RB Peyton Barber, OLs Demar Dotson and Leonard Wester, DLs DaVonte Lambert and Channing Ward and CB Javien Elliott….
  • All made the team initially as undrafted rookies.

  • While high blood pressure in children does not usually produce any symptoms, it can lead to early heart attack, stroke or other serious health issues.
  • The families involved are part of the long-term Boston Birth Cohort study, which is partially funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, so researchers hope to continue tracking them and publish follow-up reports.
  • A previous study from California found a similar relationship between maternal exposure to a different pollutant nitrogen dioxide, which comes from cigarette smoke or the burning of fossil fuels and high blood pressure in children.
  • In an opinion piece published with the study, Diane Gold and Antonella Zanobetti of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health noted that the research did not look at the season of a childs birth, which might affect pollution levels in a temperate zone such as Bostons.

Noisy Hawaiian volcano lava fissure prompts more evacuations

[/vc_column_text] [vc_column_text el_class=”topfeed-summary-list”]

  • PAHOA, Hawaii A new fissure in Hawaiis Puna District sent gases and lava exploding into the air, spurring officials to call for more evacuations as residents waited for a possible major eruption at Kilauea volcanos summit.
  • Lava spread across hundreds of yards of private land and loud explosions rocked the neighborhood not far from Leilani Estates subdivision, where more than a dozen other active vents have opened in the past week.
  • The U.S. Geological Surveys Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said new fissures, ground deformation and abundant volcanic gases indicate eruptions on the eastern flank of Kilauea are likely to continue.
  • Most of the lava outbreaks have occurred in and around the Leilani Estates neighborhood, where molten rock has burst through the ground, destroying more than two dozen homes and resulting in evacuation orders for nearly 2,000 people.
  • The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported the fissures opened just east of the Puna Geothermal Venture energy conversion plant, where steam and hot liquid are brought up through underground wells and the steam feeds a turbine generator to produce electricity.

Review: James Taylor, revitalized at 70, brings comforting joy to Amalie Arena in Tampa

[/vc_column_text] [vc_column_text el_class=”topfeed-summary-list”]

  • It was a Junior Walker song, (I’m a) Road Runner, that did it, that untethered James Taylor from his six-string and barstool.
  • Taylor assured fans that the 68-year-old Raitt was recovering nicely, and even had them record a get-well-soon message to encourage her to get back on the road.
  • On the other hand, with two full sets to play with, Taylor and his 11-piece band could afford to have fun with the setlist, mixing covers and extra songs amongst just about every hit fans could want.
  • The band, a mix of Taylor veterans and renowned sidemen like horn player Lou Marini of the Blues Brothers, such a character he had T-shirts on sale at the merch table was always present, always persistent on every song.
  • Even on Taylor’s gentler songs, the band was front and center: Steve Gadd’s evocative snare roles in Fire and Rain, for example; or a lovely interplay between Andrea Zonn’s violin and Kevin Hayes’ piano on Copperline.

In Cuba, the great American tourism boom goes bust

[/vc_column_text] [vc_column_text el_class=”topfeed-summary-list”]

  • During the first three months of this year, 95,520 Americans came to Cuba – a 40 percent drop from the same period last year, according to Cuban government statistics.
  • In November, the Trump administration published new guidelines on travel to Cuba, part of an effort to ensure that U.S. dollars were not directly aiding the communist governments power structure.
  • Yet buried inside the Trump administrations new measures was a loophole that, much like Obamas rules, still allows Americans to go to Cuba as independent visitors as long as they engage with civil-society groups, such as artists or local business executives.
  • If the Cuban people continue to suffer it is because the Castro regime doesnt allow them to hire employees, and operate and expand their own businesses, not because of the new U.S. policy toward Cuba, he said in a statement.
  • And after cutting flights to Cuba last year because of weaker-than-expected demand, a number of U.S. airlines this month snapped up the chance to win new routes to the island being awarded by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Golden State Killer suspect charged with four more murders

[/vc_column_text] [vc_column_text el_class=”topfeed-summary-list”]

  • The man suspected in the Golden State Killer crimes has been charged with four more murders, as authorities across California continue to piece together clues in a string of killings and rapes that terrorized the state four decades ago.
  • Authorities arrested DeAngelo last month, after using a combination of DNA, genealogy and exhaustive detective work to conclude that the man quietly living out his golden years in a Sacramento suburb could be one of the nations most notorious serial predators.
  • DeAngelo has now been charged in all the known slayings linked to the Golden State Killer, but police also are exploring whether he might have carried out the killings of a mother and son in the Simi Valley area in 1978.
  • Police and prosecutors say the Golden State Killer – also known as the Visalia Ransacker, the East Area Rapist and the Original Nightstalker – began his crimes with a series of break-ins that escalated to brutal rapes in the Sacramento area in 1976.
  • Police are hoping to find traces of the killers DNA on letters he sent and then use the same technique employed in the Golden State Killer case to find a suspect.

  • Its unfortunate how we played a couple of these Game 1s in the last couple of rounds, (and) dug ourselves a small hole this series, the coach said after a workout Saturday at the teams suburban practice facility.
  • There were so many good things weve done in two rounds of hockey that I think if you bottled up all the bad things in those first 10 games it would be about half of what we did in that one game last night.
  • Coach Barry Trotz, mindful that Tampa Bay lost Game 1 of its second-round series 6-2 to Boston only to strom back and win four straight games, reiterated it wont be easy to build off the Caps success in the opener.

Romaine lettuce illnesses are now in Florida. What does it mean for Tampa Bay?

[/vc_column_text] [vc_column_text el_class=”topfeed-summary-list”]

  • Eating romaine lettuce has been a no-no for about two months, when a string of related food poisonings emerged around the country.
  • But an update Wednesday from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention brings news of a food poisoning outbreak tied to romaine lettuce closer to home: Florida is now among the 29 states that have reported illnesses linked to the lettuce.
  • The outbreak has been traced to the Yuma, Ariz. growing region, where most of the romaine sold this time of year comes from.
  • At this point, the CDC is pretty blunt about its recommendations: Do not eat or buy romaine lettuce unless you can confirm it is not from the Yuma growing region, the most recent warning said.
  • This is the second E. coli/romaine outbreak since Brick Street Farms has been in business, and OMalley said each time she has seen local restaurants increase their purchases while eliminating lettuce from other places.

  • TAMPA It may or may not have been his last State of the City address, but Mayor Bob Buckhorn left it all on the stage Friday.
  • In a forceful speech that took shots at Tallahassee, celebrated the citys diversity, listed his accomplishments as mayor and gave advice for voters about to select his successor, the two-term mayor clearly reveled in his role as booster in chief.
  • The park will stimulate development on the west bank of the Hillsborough River, Buckhorn said, asking a longtime North Hyde Park neighborhood activist, Ruth McNair, to stand and be recognized for her efforts to revitalize what had been a moribund recreation area whose July 4, 1977, opening had faded into…
  • This park will stand as a testament to the commitment of this city to ensure that the rising tide of prosperity floats all boats, Buckhorn said, adding that the massive West River redevelopment project just to the north would spread prosperity to West Tampa.
  • Buckhorns vision of a city poised on the brink of a breakthrough resonated with Youngblood.

  • Lindsey Flynn, who now supervises sea turtle conservation programs for the aquarium, said that because all sea turtles are classified as either endangered or threatened, the volunteers monitoring of the nests is of vital importance.
