Bitcoin and its rivals offer no shelter from the storm

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text el_class=”topfeed-summary-list”]

  • After an exhilarating ride skywards in 2017, investors in crypto-currencies have been rudely reminded that prices can plunge earthwards, too.
  • Tether allows users to move money across exchanges and crypto-currencies without converting it back into fiat (central-bank-backed) money first.
  • They say that suspiciously large quantities of Tether were issued whenever the bitcoin price was low, and were allegedly traded for bitcoin on Bitfinex, a large currency exchange.
  • And BitConnect, a platform that borrowed customers crypto-currency in exchange for monthly returns, folded in mid-January following allegations that it was running a Ponzi scheme.
  • In America the heads of the Commodities Futures Trading Commission and the Securities and Exchange Commission, two regulators, testified to a Senate Committee this week; they agreed on the need to protect investors, albeit without stifling innovation.

EU regulators: Cryptocurrencies are ‘highly risky’ and unsuitable for investment

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text el_class=”topfeed-summary-list”]

  • Cryptocurrencies are highly risky assets and are unsuitable as investments, three European Union (EU) regulators warned Monday.
  • The European Supervisory Authorities (ESAs) for securities, banking and insurance and pensions said in a joint statement that they were concerned about an increasing number of people buying virtual currencies without being aware of the risks involved.
  • As virtual currencies and exchanges used to trade them are not regulated under EU law, the regulators warned that cryptocurrency investors are not protected in the event of an exchange going out of business or a cyber-attack.
  • The EU joins a number of government authorities in raising concern over cryptocurrencies.
  • And Indian Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said recently that his government will take measures to eliminate the use of cryptocurrencies in illegitimate activities or as part of the payment system.

Advisors not up to speed on blockchain technology will get left behind: Experts

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text el_class=”topfeed-summary-list”]

  • If you’re a financial advisor, chances are you’re not using blockchain technology and not even sure how to define it.
  • Blockchain technology was developed to serve as the backbone for the bitcoin cryptocurrency.
  • But the blockchain is rapidly gaining popularity as people realize its value as a mechanism for executing transactions without the oversight of a third party or central bank, said Magdalena Ramada, senior economist at Willis Towers Watson, in a presentation at the Technology Tools for Today Advisor Conference in Fort…
  • The blockchain is defined as a digital distributed ledger, or registry of information, according to Ramada.
  • As a result, experts predict blockchain technology will have a profound impact on the financial services industry, which focuses on transferring assets and value in a safe and secure way.

Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies – what digital money really means for our future

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text el_class=”topfeed-summary-list”]

  • Some cryptocurrencies, such as Litecoin or Dogecoin, fulfil the same purpose as bitcoin building a new digital currency with tweaks to some of the details (making transactions faster, for instance, or ensuring a basic level of inflation).
  • What you really have when you own a bitcoin is the collective agreement of every other computer on the bitcoin network that your bitcoin was legitimately created by a bitcoin miner, and then passed on to you through a series of legitimate transactions.
  • If you want to actually own some bitcoin, there are exactly two options: either become a miner (which involves investing a lot of money in computers and electricity bills probably more than the value of the bitcoin youll actually make, unless youre very smart), or simply buy some bitcoin from…
  • It is the decentralised historical record of changes in the ownership of the asset, be it simply spending a bitcoin or executing a complex smart contract in one of the second-generation cryptocurrencies such as Ethereum.
  • How precisely they do that varies from cryptocurrency to cryptocurrency, but bitcoin is a good example: every 10 minutes or so, one miner is semi-randomly selected to do the work of taking all the transactions theyve heard about, declaring them confirmed and bundling them up into one block of transactions,…

Bitcoin Dominance Eases with Ripple Trailblazing into the Weekend

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text el_class=”topfeed-summary-list”]

  • Bitcoin returns order to the market, with Ripple, Cardano and Stellar Lumen leading the way this morning, as the cryptomarket looks for another run in defiance of regulatory chatter.
  • Tuesdays $5,920.72 low was a moment of truth, not only for Bitcoin, but for the cryptomarket in general, with the cryptobears seizing the opportunity to dominate the news wires in the early part of the week.
  • Bitcoin managed to close out the week at $8,886.89, an 8.5% gain from Mondays opening $8,190.78 and more importantly, up 50.1% from Tuesdays $5,920.72 low.
  • This is largely reflected in Bitcoins dominance numbers through the week, which eased from 35.9 to a current 33.6%, as investor appetite for the altcoins improved through the second half of the week and into the weekend.
  • At the time of writing, Bitcoin was up just 2.63% to $8,922.24 in the early part of the day and, with Cboe Bitcoin futures February contract closing the week at $8,610, how far Bitcoin can go remains to be seen, with Fridays close likely to be a hindrance that others…
