  • One common crime that’s carried out on cryptocurrency investors is the phone-porting attack.
  • Hackers snoop around social media, looking for cryptocurrency conversations in which investors post their phone and email for easy contact.
  • Once the hackers take over the phone number, they can go into the victim’s cryptocurrency exchange account by resetting the password, ultimately stealing cryptocurrencies from the account.
  • Cody Brown, a virtual reality developer, blogged about how he lost around $8,000 worth of cryptocurrencies on Coinbase in 15 minutes, triggered by a phone porting attack on his phone account.
  • Adam Dachis, a former writer for Lifehacker, says his Coinbase account was ransacked in May by hackers who took control of his home computer, costing him $10,000 worth of cryptocurrencies.

  • In addition, Ripple, the company, owns 60% of the supply of the token XRP, which leads crypto enthusiasts to criticize XRP for not being truly decentralized, the way that bitcoin and other leading digital tokens are decentralized.
  • Garlinghouse explains xRapid this way: “The bank of Andy can sell $1, buy XRP.
  • Garlinghouse even acknowledged, about xRapid, “I talk to senior banks, people who are close to the company Ripple, they’re invested in us.
  • When asked about that spike, Garlinghouse said, “I’ll tell you the exact same thing I tell people inside the company: The price of XRP over three hours, over three days, over three weeks, or even three months, that is not success.
  • “I will again point out: Ripple, the company, as the owner of 61% of the tokens today, is the most interested party in the success of the XRP ecosystem.

  • Last week, Forbes Magazine, known for tracking the world’s most wealthy individuals, published a new rich list.
  • The “Crypto billionaire’s club”, a who’s who of those who have the most valuable stakes in cryptocurrency, looked like the coming of age for a new wave of tech geeks who had become extraordinarily wealthy.
  • At the top of the list was Chris Larsen, the co-founder of the Ripple currency, with a net worth of up to $8bn (£5.8bn).
  • By the time Forbes had got around to publishing the list, most of the 10 “billionaires” on the list were no longer worth that much.
  • Last week a mass sell-off of cryptocurrencies saw prices…

  • Its website described “the world’s first legitimate Ponzi scheme” and encouraged people to buy and then “shill this coin heavily to your family and friends like a fucking sociopath”.
  • People who buy bananacoins are essentially investing in the fruit business and will see returns on their investments if the price of bananas rises.
  • “It sounds goofy but there’s an interesting profitable business behind it selling real-world products for money,” said the cryptocurrency investor Chris Koerner.
  • “It was meant to have no value, but people bought it for the novelty and the people behind it made money,” said Song, who says that cases like these highlight the importance of humour and meme culture within the crypto community.
  • Social media platforms fuel the speculation, with anonymous tipsters operating huge “pump and dump” schemes in which they pick a low-volume coin and encourage a group of people to buy into it to inflate the price, encouraging others to pile in, and then sell at a profit.

  • In the past, the exchange’s executives and spokesman have said that its customers are simply using Tether to buy virtual currencies as they might otherwise use United States dollars.
  • The banking problems have made it hard for customers to get money in and out of Bitfinex, but traders have continued to use the exchange, in part because of Tether.
  • But the report was far from conclusive and Tether has never produced a real audit, leading to suspicions that Bitfinex may be printing virtual money backed by nothing.
  • The Tether currency has been valuable to traders because it allows them to hold a stable token, tied to the value of the dollar, and move it quickly between virtual currency exchanges.
  • Several anonymous reports circulating among traders, including one posted to a website last week, have pointed to data from Bitfinex itself, showing that the price of Bitcoin has frequently gone up soon after new Tether were created, generally as a result of big trades on Bitfinex.
