Banks in Britain and ban Bitcoin buying with credit cards

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text el_class=”topfeed-summary-list”]

  • LONDON (Reuters) – Banks in Britain and the United States have banned the use of credit cards to buy Bitcoin and other “cryptocurrencies”, fearing a plunge in their value will leave customers unable to repay their debts.
  • Lloyds Banking Group Plc (LLOY.L), which issues just over a quarter of all credit cards in Britain, and Virgin Money (VM.L) said they would ban credit card customers from buying cryptocurrencies, following the lead of U.S. banking giants JP Morgan Chase Co (JPM.N) and Citigroup (C.N).
  • However, other banks said on Monday they will continue to allow credit card customers to buy cryptocurrencies.
  • A spokeswoman for Chase bank said it is not currently processing credit card purchases of cryptocurrencies because of the volatility and risk involved, while a Citi spokeswoman confirmed a similar ban, but did not give a reason.
  • “Across Lloyds Bank, Bank of Scotland, Halifax and MBNA, we do not accept credit card transactions involving the purchase of cryptocurrencies,” the Lloyds spokeswoman said in an email.

  • Thawing tensions on the Korean Peninsula faced a fresh test Monday when Seoul accused its northern neighbor of hacking cryptocurrency exchanges, stealing bitcoin and other digital currency worth millions of dollars.

  • “North Korea sent emails that could hack into cryptocurrency exchanges and their customers’ private information and stole (cryptocurrency) worth billions of won,” Kim Byung-kee, a member of South Korea’s parliamentary intelligence committee, said Monday, Reuters reported.
  • Pyongyang is still trying to hack into the cryptocurrency exchanges, Kim said, but the South was doing its best to prevent further infiltration.
  • South Korea is one of the world’s most active bitcoin trading hubs.

This European royal family might invest in cryptocurrencies

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text el_class=”topfeed-summary-list”]

  • The Crown Prince of Liechtenstein has told CNBC that blockchain and cryptocurrencies like bitcoin could be one way to help his family restore its wealth.
  • “Particularly with this whole new digital economy, it is something to look into more into in the future,” Crown Prince Alois told CNBC on Friday.
  • Liechtenstein is a German-speaking microstate in Central Europe with a population of less than 40,000 people.
  • The principality owes much of its wealth to its traditional status as a tax haven, though it has attempted to rebrand itself as a legitimate financial centre.
  • Bordered by Switzerland to the west and south and Austria to the east and north, the principality is headed by the Prince of Liechtenstein although in practicality, power now lies with his son, Crown Prince Alois.

Lloyds’ bitcoin credit card ban: Sensible but too late to have much impact

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text el_class=”topfeed-summary-list”]

  • However, given that the corporate symbol of Lloyds Banking Group eats oats and goes “neigh” you’ll have to forgive me just this once because that makes it just perfect for a discussion about the bank’s decision to block the credit card payments of people trying to trade bitcoin.
  • It just doesn’t want them using its shareholders’ money for the purposes of gambling on a financial horse whose legs could snap at any given moment.
  • And just as there are other credit card issuers you can still use to buy bitcoin, so are there are other places to find the ads.
  • Both know, notwithstanding the potential use of cryptocurrencies for the purposes of money laundering and other criminal enterprises, that when the crash comes it is going to hurt a lot of people, and lead to a lot of uncomfortable questions being asked.
  • But the bitcoin horses are running free as the stable door swings in the wind, and with the cryptocurrency’s value currently crashing, it looks like a serious dose of grass sickness is on the way.

The UK’s financial regulator has a warning about bitcoin

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text el_class=”topfeed-summary-list”]

  • Bitcoin and other investments are being used to lure people into scams, the UK’s financial watchdog has warned.
  • But any money investors hand over might then get locked up, with fraudsters changing prices on their website, forcing people to pay out extreme amounts of money to get their investment back, or just taking it and refuse to pay it back.
  • The FCA said a rise in people being targeted online means the profile of investment scam victims is changing.
  • Mark Steward, director of enforcement at the FCA, said: “As people have become more sceptical of investment-related cold calls and consumer habits have changed, we have seen investment fraud moving online and to social media.
  • TV presenter Nick Hewer, who is supporting the campaign, added: “The amount being lost every day to online investment fraud, such as binary options scams, is staggering.
