  • So Kahana and his colleagues collaborated with 25 epilepsy patients, each of whom had between 100 and 200 electrodes implanted in their brain (to monitor seizure-related electrical activity).
  • Kahana and his team piggybacked on those implants, using the electrodes to record high-resolution brain activity during memory tasks.Machine learning algorithms learned to associate patterns of electrode measurements with a patients’ likelihood of memorizing a word.
  • The researchers’ system improved patients’ ability to recall words by an average of 15 percent. This isn’t the first time Kahana’s lab has explored the impacts of brain stimulation on memory.
  • A machine learning algorithm trained on more than three sessions might perform better than the ones in Kahana’s latest study. But even with higher resolution and more training data, scientists will need to grapple with the implications of using opaque algorithms to study—and manipulate—brains.
  • For this particular study, the researchers used a simple linear classifier, which allowed them to draw some inferences about how activity at individual electrodes might contribute to their model’s ability to discriminate between patterns of brain activity.

  • It is heavily based on the Data Protection Act 1998 but will lead to schools having to refine their approach to Data Protection.
  • At its heart it changes the importance of Data Protection and emphasises the schools’ accountability.
  • Making Data Protection important means that the schools should employ ‘Privacy by Design’ – thinking about how the school uses data in everything it does.
  • This requres a change of focus and a lot of effort for most schools, who will now need to think about undertaking data audits, appointing a Data Protection Officer to help ensure compliance and making sure that processes are updated to ensure that you are operating within the law.
  • From bespoke awareness training, helping them undertake data audits or even providing them with the option to outsource your Data Protection Officer, Accordio is here to help support schools and enable them to focus on continuing to deliver high quality education to their pupils.
