    IoT meets Augmented Reality

    [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text el_class=”topfeed-summary-list”]

    • Many years ago there was an entertaining television commercial in the USA where a company, I think it was Wendy’s, explained how much care and effort they put into making a perfect meal for their customers.
    • At the time I didn’t realise how many truisms this commercial contained, but the implied message of “Good things take extra effort” didn’t escape me and with time I learned to appreciate how much work really goes into making extraordinary things.
    • Although there are numerous vendors offering IoT solutions, ThingWorx is the only one I have found that focuses on developing IoT interfaces with a minimum of coding skills required and has an Augmented Reality design interface.
    • Considering the time and effort that has gone into the development of ThingWorx Studio, I expect it will be a quite some time before any IoT competitors match or exceed the ThingWorx platform capabilities.
    • Whereas in the “old world” vendors would create proprietary solutions, forcing you to live within the boundaries of their technology, ThingWorx opens the world of IoT to allow companies to pick and choose Best-of-Breed solutions for the specific needs that they have.

Virtual and Augmented Reality in Medical Education

    [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text el_class=”topfeed-summary-list”]

    • Building on nearly 3 decades of experience using virtual reality to build immersive therapies for patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), psychologist Skip Rizzo, PhD, is tackling a new challenge—training clinicians to more skillfully handle delicate interactions with patients.
    • It may seem counterintuitive that virtual patients could help clinicians improve their interactions with real ones, but those using the technologies say it provides the students with valuable experience and feedback.
    • They worked with Kognito, a company that leverages gaming technology to build a range of health care training simulations using evidence-based content, to develop virtual patient simulations that were used alongside more traditional methods.
    • With an augmented and virtual reality device, medical students at Bond University in Queensland, Australia, can manipulate a virtual 3 dimensional (3D) model of the brain or enter a virtual world that allows them to skim the surface of the spine or look inside a kidney (Video).
    • In a head-to-head study of 59 anatomy students randomized to the same anatomy lesson using either virtual or augmented reality or a tablet-based lesson that included a 3D model and a 10-minute narrative by a surgeon, Moro and his colleagues show that these new tools were as effective as the…

Brain-controlled video game to hit VR arcades this year

    [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text el_class=”topfeed-summary-list”]

    • Boston-based startup Neurable will bring its brain-controlled VR video game Awakening, which the company claims is the first of its kind, to VR arcades around the world by the end of this year.
    • When the gamer focuses his gaze on an object in the game, Neurable’s machine learning software recognizes the resulting changes in the EEG signal and turns this into a game command, selecting that object for use.
    • For this to work, the gamer goes through a training process before playing–though it is actually Neurable’s software that must be trained, as it has to learn what pattern of neuronal firing–as depicted on the EEG–indicates that the gamer is concentrating on a specific object.
    • Here is what it looked and felt like to those who tested the device: – – The story line is quite simple because Awakening serves as a demonstration of Neurable’s BCI technology rather than an actual video game with a narrative.
    • According to Alcaide, VR games are only the first application of Neurable’s technology.
